Grammar Level E: “Eagle”
Diving Deeper into Writing and Literature
Ages 9-11
Literature: Level E students continue a deep dive into literature with higher level books and more complex themes. Books are read together, slowly, with much time spent in the discussion of ideas, connections, struggles, virtues, vocabulary, and literary devices. Students are expected to respond orally and in writing, showing their mastery of content and vocabulary in unit and final tests. Titles at this level include: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Homer Price, Dangerous Journey, and selections from The Blue Fairy Book.
Latin: Formal Latin instruction begins in earnest at Level E. Using Memoria Press’ Latina Christiana curriculum, students will master 25 Grammar forms (verb conjugations or noun declensions) 250 vocabulary words and a number of Latin sayings and traditional prayers. Latin is a better teacher of English than English itself, and it is through the study of Latin that students gain a deep understanding of English grammar and vocabulary. Latin study is also a mental discipline that orders the mind in a way that no other subject can. Additionally, students will master (and be able to recite fluently) 31 grammar rules, 10 capitalization rules, and 15 punctuation rules by completing brief exercises, including some diagramming and daily dictation. Students will recite the rules and demonstrate their correct use through dictation of model sentences.
Grammar: In Level E students will begin to study English grammar in earnest through Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind, Blue Workbook. This curriculum gives students regular, careful practice in grammar, usage, mechanics, sentence structure, diagramming, and analysis. Students will practice identifying and applying parts of speech, parts of the sentence, phrases, clauses, and the four sentence structures: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex. Through repeated practice, dictation, sentence analysis, and diagramming, students will learn to see how language works and how strong sentences are built. Students will continue this study of Grammar into their Pre-Logic years.
Cursive Penmanship: Students will continue to practice beautiful cursive in both their cursive books and copywork books. At this level, all writing is expected to be done in “museum quality” cursive.
Composition: Level E students continue their writing journey using “Fables, Myths, and Fairytales” from the Institute for Excellence in Writing. Students will learn to make a key word outline from a written paragraph, and to write both a rough draft and final draft with structure and style. Students will learn to “dress up” their writing with descriptive vocabulary, strong verbs, who/which clauses, and -ly adverbs. Upon completing Level E, students will be proficient in summarizing a simple text, making a key word outline, rewriting it in their own words using interesting language, a variety of sentence styles, proper English grammar, and logical organization.
Math: Arithmetic 4 (Click for Scope and Sequence) Level E students will review the basic facts of multiplication and division, then move to long division, multiplying by two-digit numbers, and checking in the four processes of computation. Students will develop word problem skills include distance-rate-time, two-step problems, using sketches, and identifying missing information.
Christian Studies: Level E students continue their study of the Old Testament from Level D, covering from Moses to the end of the Old Testament using Memoria Press’ Christian Studies I. Students learn vocabulary, discuss themes, memorize weekly verses, and study maps. Students in also memorize the Nicene Creed and longer portions of scripture monthly.

Spelling and Dictation: Level E students will continue strengthening their spelling, phonics, vocabulary, and dictation skills through Memoria Press’s Traditional Spelling program. This curriculum uses a consistent, phonetic approach that helps students see and hear the patterns within words. Lessons include written practice, vocabulary work, words used in context, color-coded phonogram marking, and regular sound dictation. Students practice writing phonograms, spelling words, and complete sentences from oral dictation, helping them develop careful listening, accurate spelling, and stronger sentence mechanics. This steady practice supports both reading and writing as students grow in precision, confidence, and command of the English language.
History: During the afternoon program, Level E students will study world history through The Story of the World by Susan Wise Bauer. This engaging, chronological history curriculum introduces students to the great sweep of human history through lively storytelling rather than dry textbook recitation. Students rotate through major periods of history by year, and in Level E students will cover “Early Modern Times.” As they listen to the audio book, students will complete map work, practice note-taking, and participate in thoughtful discussions that help them connect people, places, events, and ideas. This study of history helps students grow in attention, memory, narration, and understanding of God’s providence throughout time.
Science: Also during the afternoon program, Level E students will study science through Science Shepherd’s video-based Christian science curriculum. First, students will explore Astronomy: God’s Universe, learning about the sun, planets, solar system, stars, galaxies, and nebulae while considering how astronomical observations point to the order and majesty of God’s creation. Then, students will study Unearthing the Bible, an introduction to biblical archaeology that examines archaeological discoveries and how they help students better understand the historical reliability of Scripture. Through video lessons, workbook activities, discussion, narration, and practical projects, students will grow in observation, wonder, and confidence that God’s world and God’s Word are beautifully connected.
Physical Education: Level E students will participate in 20 minutes of daily P.E. instruction using the SPARK P.E. curriculum. SPARK provides structured, research-based physical education lessons that help students develop healthy habits, physical fitness, motor skills, movement knowledge, and positive social skills. Through active games, skill-building activities, and guided practice, students will grow in strength, coordination, teamwork, good sportsmanship, and enjoyment of physical activity.
Subjects to be covered at home: Life Skills, fine arts, family discipleship, spiritual formation, and nature study.
