Grammar Level E: “Badger”

Diving Deeper into Writing and Literature

Ages 9-11 

Literature: Level E students continue a deep dive into literature with higher level books and more complex themes. Books are read together, slowly, with much time spent in the discussion of ideas, connections, struggles, virtues, vocabulary, and literary devices. Students are expected to respond orally and in writing, showing their mastery of content and vocabulary in unit and final tests. Titles at this level include: The Cricket in Time’s SquareHomer Price, Dangerous Journey, and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.

Spelling:  Spelling practice continues with more complex word lists for weekly practice in order to keep skills sharp. At this level, students are expected to apply spelling habits throughout all of their written work. 

Latin & Grammar:  Formal Latin instruction begins in earnest at Level E. Over the course of two years, students will master 25 Grammar forms (verb conjugations or noun declensions) 250 vocabulary words and a number of Latin sayings and traditional prayers. Latin is a better teacher of English than English itself, and it is through the study of Latin that students gain a deep understanding of English grammar and vocabulary. Latin study is also a mental discipline that orders the mind in a way that no other subject can. Additionally, students will master (and be able to recite fluently) 31 grammar rules, 10 capitalization rules, and 15 punctuation rules by completing brief exercises, including some diagramming. Students will recite the rules and demonstrate their correct use through dictation of model sentences.

Cursive Penmanship: Students will continue to practice beautiful cursive in their copywork books. At this level, all writing is expected to be done in “museum quality” cursive. 

Writing Composition: Level E students continue their writing journey by learning to narrate, outline, and rewrite using description and variation. Upon completion of Level E, students will be able to quickly, efficiently and correctly identify the 3 plot components of a fable and 9 plot components of a story, breakdown the story into a logical outline, and paraphrase the story in a variety of ways including: variation and amplification, reduction, alternate perspective, and inversion. The will also be able to easily and correctly add figures of description to enhance their writing. 

Math:  Arithmetic 4 (Click for Scope and Sequence) Level E students will review the basic facts of multiplication and division, then move to long division, multiplying by two-digit numbers, and checking in the four processes of computation. Students will develop word problem skills include distance-rate-time, two-step problems, using sketches, and identifying missing information.

Christian Studies: Level E students continue their study from Moses to the end of the Old Testament learning vocabulary, discussing themes, memorizing weekly verses, and studying maps. Students in also memorize the Apostles Creed and memorize longer portions of scripture monthly.

Subjects to be covered at home:  Life Skills, physical fitness, fine arts, family discipleship and spiritual formation, nature study and history.
