Grammar Level C: “Beaver”

Moving Towards Chapter Books and Advancing in Spelling

Ages 7-9

Reading:  Level C students are reading well and are ready to gain the greater fluency and stamina required to read longer books. This year starts with a short chapter book called Prairie School, followed by a collection of American Folk Tales, then The Courage of Sarah Noble, a collection of Beatrix Potter stories, and finally, Little House in the Big Woods, which is the capstone book of the year and catapults students into fully being readers of “real” chapter books. Students at Level C are still being taught “how to read” with systematic phonics instruction and support throughout, as well as learning new vocabulary. They are also learning how to think about what they are reading as they respond to questions in writing about the stories.

Spelling Formal spelling instruction continues in Level C. Students review the phonics and spelling rules introduced in Level B, and learn new ones. Spelling words and lists are longer in Level C, and students are expected to utilize their words in dictation sentences.

Latin & Grammar:  Latin instruction this year continues with more fun conversational phrases and sayings, and a new Latin prayer. In addition to Latin, students are introduced to the parts of speech and other grammar constructs such as “singular” and “plural” through teacher-guided lessons, dictation, and copywork.

Writing Writing instruction comes from Copywork, where students carefully copy scripture and poetry verses, paying attention to grammar and spelling constructs therein.

Cursive Penmanship:  Cursive instruction and practice continues daily. Students are expected to use cursive for all of their writing by the time they complete this level. Students have a chance to “show off” their “museum quality” cursive as they compete in an end-of-the-year Level C handwriting competition.

Math:  Arithmetic 2 (Click for Scope and Sequence) Students explore numbers and place value through 1000. They continue to practice skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, 25s and 100s, adding 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s, and 9s to prepare them for mastering multiplication in Level D. Level C students master all addition and subtractions facts through 9 + 9, and learn to add and subtract two digit numbers using carrying and borrowing. Students become familiar with fractions, and continue to practice telling time,  and adding and subtracting money.

Enrichment Level C includes weekly read-alouds and discussion of beautiful children’s literature and poetry, as well as art and music appreciation.

Subjects to be covered at home:  Life Skills, physical fitness, fine arts, family discipleship and spiritual formation, nature study and history
