Grammar Level A: “Mouse”
Ready to Read
Ages 5-7
Phonics and Reading: Level A students are introduced to one letter of the alphabet at a time and are taught its sound and how to write it with proper form. By the beginning of week two, students begin learning to blend those letters into words! Reading progresses rapidly as more letters are added week by week. Daily recitation of all of the letters of the alphabet and their sounds, with an emphasis on short vowel sounds, lead to a solid mastery of the phonetic code needed for reading and spelling. Students also learn 90 common sight words and practice them daily with flash cards and dictation. To ensure reading success, students are provided abundant reading practice with over 40 phonetic stories, beginner books, and colorful readers.
Writing: Level A students learn to write the words they are reading. They learn proper letter form, as well as correct pencil grip and posture for ease and comfort. Students practice dictation weekly, learning to listen to a word and write the letters that correspond to the beginning, middle and ending sounds they hear. In addition, students practice “Copywork” in which they copy short scripture or poetry verses. Within the context of these copied verses, students are gently introduced to grammar constructs and more complex word spellings.
Latin: Students learn fun Latin conversational phrases and Latin prayers as part of their daily recitation.
Math: Arithmetic 1, 1st half. (Click for scope and sequence) Level A students are introduced to number sense and number formation. They begin memorizing addition facts and explore everyday math through games played with a hundreds chart, daily calendar completion, oral and mental problem solving, memorization of coin values and telling time.
